Tuscany, Lake Como or Amalfi Coast: Choosing Your Backdrop

A different way to choose your region

Couples usually choose their Italian region with their eyes: a photograph of a cypress avenue, a villa above the water, a lemon terrace over the sea. That's a fine place to start, but it's not where the decision should end. The region you choose shapes how your ceremony feels to stand inside: the light at your vows, the sound behind your voice, how far your guests travel, and how the day flows from start to finish.

Tuscany: warmth, space and stillness

Tuscany is the region of room to breathe. Rolling hills, stone farmhouses, cypress lines, and long golden light in the late afternoon. Ceremonies here feel grounded and unhurried, with space for guests, for a longer ritual, for stillness between your words. It's forgiving logistically, with countless estates used to hosting weddings and a well-established network of local vendors. Summer afternoons can run hot, so many couples schedule ceremonies for late afternoon or early evening.

Lake Como: drama, elegance and water

Como is theatre. Steep green mountains drop straight into deep blue water, and grand villas line the shore with terraces that seem built for vows. Ceremonies here feel elegant and a little cinematic, and the lake does half the emotional work simply by being behind you. Wind off the water and boat logistics are worth planning for, especially if guests are arriving by private boat transfer. Como also tends to book up quickly for its most iconic venues, so early planning pays off here more than almost anywhere else.

The Amalfi Coast: light, colour and edge

The Amalfi Coast is the most dramatic of the three: cliffs, pastel towns stacked above the Tyrrhenian, lemon groves, and a sea that glitters almost aggressively in summer. Ceremonies here feel vivid and alive. In return, the terrain is steep and access can be genuinely challenging, so guest mobility and timings need real thought. Narrow coastal roads also mean transfers take longer than they look on a map, which is worth building into your day's schedule.

A quick comparison

Tuscany: warm, rustic-elegant, calm. Best for space, stillness and the land. Watch for summer heat at midday. Lake Como: elegant, dramatic, cinematic. Best for glamour, formality and water. Watch for wind, boat logistics and high demand. Amalfi Coast: vivid, colourful, edge. Best for spectacle, colour and the sea. Watch for steep access and guest mobility.

Questions worth asking yourself before deciding

A few practical questions that often settle the decision faster than photographs alone: • How far are most of our guests willing and able to travel, and what's their comfort with steep terrain or boats? • Do we want a long, relaxed weekend feel, or a tighter, high-glamour single day? • What season are we marrying in, and how does each region handle summer heat or shoulder-season weather? • Is our guest list large enough that we need a region with many venue options, or intimate enough that one perfect villa will do?

And if none of the three is quite right

These three get the attention, but they aren't the whole of Italy. Florence brings Renaissance grandeur, Sicily a wilder Mediterranean soul, Rome the weight of history, and Lake Garda a gentler alpine calm. If your instinct is pulling elsewhere, follow it, there's no single correct answer here.

Choosing the setting, then filling it with meaning

The backdrop matters, but it's the frame, not the picture. Once you've chosen where, the ceremony is what people will actually remember. When your region starts to feel decided, tell me where you're leaning and we'll design a ceremony that belongs to it.
